Occupational health and safety, commonly referred to as health and safety (H&S), is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety, health, and welfare of people at work. In the UK, health and safety legislation is drawn up and enforced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities.  The Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. It sets out the general duties which:

  • employers have towards employees and members of the public
  • employees have to themselves and to each other
  • certain self-employed have towards themselves and others
